Postponed: News Leaders Association to host 2020 Emerging Leaders Institute at Loyola
POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: Columbia, Mo. (February 20, 2020) — The News Leaders Association is accepting applications for the 2020 Emerging Leaders Institute, which will be located at Loyola University Chicago on June 5-6, with the goal of training up-and-coming news leaders with diverse backgrounds, and helping them develop core leadership and strategic skills.
The program is focused on developing and serving mid-level managers from newsrooms serving all media platforms, with a specific focus on those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.
This is the ninth consecutive year NLA (and its predecessor, the American Society of News Editors) has committed to training the next generation of newsroom leaders. The program will be led by Jill Geisler, Loyola's Bill Plante Chair in Leadership and Media Integrity, Alfredo Carbajal, managing editor of Al Día at The Dallas Morning News; and Robyn Tomlin, executive editor of The News & Observer and McClatchy's Southeast regional editor. Other faculty members include Julie Moos, executive director of the National Press Club Journalism Institute and Mizell Stewart III, vice president of news operations for Gannett and the USA TODAY Network.
“Our goal at the Emerging Leaders Institute is to impart skills that news leaders will use to lead their newsrooms through constant technological disruption while defending and upholding core journalistic values and fiercely pushing for greater diversity and inclusiveness in staffing and in the communities that we cover,” Carbajal said.
"I care deeply about this program," Geisler said. "All of us who volunteer as faculty are committed to bringing more women and people of color into leadership roles in journalism, with the tools to help them thrive."
The institute will provide leadership and management training for emerging leaders from organizations across all news platforms in the United States. It is tailored to address the most pressing issues for newsroom leaders and the basic skills needed to lead and drive change. Some of the topics in the program include coaching and feedback, leadership style, news values in digital platforms and social media environments, goal-setting and strategy, financial leadership and leading teams.
Hong Cheng, Dean of Loyola’s School of Communication said, “We are proud to partner with the News Leaders Association, a premier national organization for journalism leaders. We look forward to welcoming the participants of NLA's innovative Emerging Leaders Institute to our campus. Our school is privileged to help increase the representation of women and people of color in newsroom management.”
The institute is free and NLA will provide a limited travel reimbursement to participants. Space is limited to 20 participants. Selected candidates will receive an email with information on lodging and how to receive travel reimbursements.
Selected candidates and their supervisors will also be required to complete pre-institute assessment forms before participating in the program.
The American Press Institute and McClatchy are generous sponsors of the 2020 Emerging Leaders Institutes.
