Challenge from Greenville News opens access to Spartanburg probate records

Spartanburg County Probate Court changed its photography policy on court records Thursday after a challenge from The Greenville News. Copies of the public records — which previously cost $1 a page — are now obtainable for free.

On Thursday afternoon, signs posted on every wall of the probate records room in the basement of the Spartanburg County Courthouse warning of "no photography" came down. Now the public can take photographs of archived court records.

A review by The News of nine Upstate probate courts across the state found that Spartanburg's policy was out of step.
